Behind the Scenes: What a Told By Fire Shoot Actually Looks Like

If you've ever watched one of our videos and thought, "That looked way more natural than a typical marketing video,"that's exactly the point. One of the biggest questions we get is, "What's it actually like to film with Told By Fire?" The short answer? It's probably a lot more relaxed than you're expecting. There aren't giant production crews running around with clipboards. There's no one yelling "Action!" every five minutes. And you definitely don't need to memorize a script before we show up. Instead, we show up ready to have conversations.

It Starts Before the Camera Comes Out

Every shoot starts with a game plan. We'll already know what story we're trying to tell, what your goals are, and who we're talking to. That way, when we arrive, we're not trying to figure everything out on the spot. Some shoots are at construction sites before the sun comes up. Others are inside busy offices, restaurants, manufacturing facilities, retail stores, or homes. Every business is different, so every shoot is too. But no matter where we are, the goal stays the same: Capture what makes your business different.

We Don't Script People

This surprises a lot of first-time clients. Instead of handing you pages of dialogue, we'll ask questions. We'll have conversations while the cameras are rolling because that's when the best stories come out. The little moments. The laughs. The things you would've never thought to say if someone handed you a script. People connect with people, not perfect lines. That's why we care a lot more about authenticity than perfection.

Yes... It Might Feel Weird for About Five Minutes

Almost everyone tells us the same thing before we start. "I'm terrible on camera." Then, about five minutes into the shoot, they completely forget the camera is even there. Our job isn't just filming. It's creating an environment where you feel comfortable enough to be yourself. Because that's what your audience wants to see. Not someone pretending to be a spokesperson. You.

We Capture More Than You Think

While we're filming interviews or conversations, we're constantly looking for the moments happening around them. Someone helping a customer. Your team joking around. The details of your work. Drone shots. Close-ups. Wide shots. The little things most people don't even notice. Those moments are what make a video feel real. It's why our clients end up with content they can use for weeks, not just one post.

Every Shoot Has Its Own Personality

One week we might be walking a beachfront construction project. The next we're following a delivery driver making morning deliveries. Then we're touring a bourbon lounge that's still being built. Or filming a company volleyball tournament where everyone forgets they're technically "working." No two businesses are alike, and we think your content should reflect that. That's why we never try to force every client into the same style of video.

The Best Moments Are Usually Unplanned

Some of our favorite clips have never been on a shot list. A team member cracking a joke. A customer sharing an unexpected story. A business owner getting excited while explaining something they're passionate about. Those are the moments people remember. Not because they're polished. Because they're real.

After the Shoot

Once filming wraps, that's when the editing process begins. We'll sort through everything we captured and build content around the story, not just the footage.

That might become:

  • Instagram Reels

  • YouTube videos

  • LinkedIn content

  • Photography

  • Blog posts

  • Newsletters

  • Short-form clips

  • Website content

One shoot becomes content that works across multiple platforms, helping your business stay consistent without constantly starting from scratch.

It's Not About Making a Commercial

A lot of people think they're hiring us to make an advertisement. They're not. They're hiring us to tell a story. The businesses that stand out today aren't necessarily the ones spending the most money on marketing. They're the ones willing to show people who they are. Their team. Their process. Their values. Their personality. That's the stuff people actually remember.

The Bottom Line

At Told By Fire, we don't just show up with cameras, we show up ready to understand your business. The goal has never been to create the most polished commercial in the room. It's to capture the people, moments, and stories that make your brand worth remembering. When people see the real side of your business, they don't just watch your content, they connect with it. And those connections are what build trust, spark conversations, and turn viewers into customers. So if you've been putting off creating content because you think you need to be perfect, you don't. You just need to be willing to tell your story. We'll handle the rest.
